Warehouse scanning has become the normal for all but tiny stock holding businesses. Items are scanned on arrival and automatically added to the inventory, held in a database. The system is then used to control picking, packing and putaways.
A barcode scanning system processes data from barcode scanners. The system uses the barcode information to – update inventories, processing returns and optimise picking.
You’ll need to look at your processes and contact suppliers to see whether you need to print new barcodes or use the ones already on your stock. You’ll then need barcode scanners and a software system to control everything – these are often called warehouse management systems (WMS)
Barcodes provide a unique reference for each product you stock. The barcodes link to a system which contains further information such as name, size, weight and even stock levels of the product. A commonly used standard for barcoding is the UPC – a sequence of 12 digits seen on many retail products.
